Bike Park Skills Area

Bike Park Skills Area

The Spirit of Coromandel Trust had a vision 10 years ago to turn the ex-landfill site on Hauraki Road into a “vibrant recreational facility for all to enjoy”. In this time, the land has been rehabilitated with fencing and earthworks to a stage where it can now be developed into bike park tracks and associated facilities. There has been significant liaison with local Iwi, Department of Conservation, Council, landowners and other associated parties during this time, and whilst it is said it takes a community to raise a baby, this is definitely the case with the Bike Park.

So what can you expect to see?
Well, as part of Ride Coromandel, a Bike Park will be created at 525 Hauraki Road. This is to meet the growing community need as more people look to enjoy local recreational activities in Coromandel town and surrounding areas. As part of the development, this site will feature an all weather asphalt pump track, a skills development area including three gentle descent trails and children’s trail area. This will be next to the car park area.

Adjacent to this is on what is known as the Kauri block and a designated gold mining area intermittently from 1870 - 1930s will be the grade three flow trails and Kauri dieback prevention wash facility. The trails will be designed for riding for the whole family to enjoy and will cater to a range of skill levels for both e-bikers and mountain bikers. The surface will be hard packed and the initial trails will be developed by professional trail builders, to NZMTBA trail specifications. The descent trails will have small jumps, berms and technical flow to encourage riders to become proficient in skill level before heading out to the cross country trails.

The all weather asphalt pump track will be 1200m in length and is designed as the ideal access to cycling from toddlers through to professional cyclists. Our track is designed to encourage community spirit, learning and promote an active outdoor lifestyle for all. Pump tracks are a hive of community spirit and a destination for all to enjoy themselves.

Other associated facilities such as toilets, storage shed and a car parking area will also be developed.

During the construction of the trails there will be small machinery operating and we request that you stay safely away from the construction site areas and do not enter any trails where there are boundaries in place. The track linking Hauraki road to the Harray trail will be temporarily closed whilst the trails are being made, and this will be signposted once the construction begins.

We apologize for any inconvenience during this time.

Currently we are awaiting final paperwork to be processed then the commencement of track building will begin.
We hope to be riding the new trails by early summer 2021, so watch this space!
